The Spirit of Amsterdam: Our Dear Ark in the Attic (Dutch spoken)
Mounir Samuel tells Our Dear Ark in the Attic (Dutch spoken)
One of the most famous religious stories is that of Noah’s Ark. For the festival The Spirit of Amsterdam, master storyteller, political scientist, and religion expert Mounir Samuel delved into this age-old tale and translated it into the challenges of today.
Mounir shows how relevant the Ark still is. Not as a wooden ship, but as a blueprint for a new ark in our time: a social network, an “action response committee” that offers resilience, fosters solidarity, and empowers people to rise in resistance together.
His search did not remain theoretical: in the summer of 2025, he actually built an “ark” between the Netherlands and Gaza, composed of doctors, financiers, friends, and strangers who felt connected. How this came about, what lessons we can draw from it for our city, and how we ourselves can contribute, lies at the heart of Our Dear Ark in the Attic.
The performance is energetic, interactive, and full of humor, and is staged in one of the most remarkable locations in Amsterdam: the hidden church of the Our Lord in the Attic Museum.
