Junior school

Our programmes for junior school pupils focus on civics and relate to themes such as home, feasts and religion. How did people live in the seventeenth century and how do we live today? What kind of festivals do we celebrate? What are the differences and the similarities between the world’s major religions? In our programmes we concentrate on pupils’ own experiences and encourage their curiosity.

Feast! In the City

Everyone celebrates! In this special Feast! route through the museum pupils discover all kinds of things about different festivals guided by a museum docent. Which festivals do pupils in the class celebrate? Does everyone celebrate the same holidays? Pupils discuss the various festivals they celebrate among themselves, and describe how, where and with whom. Besides Christmas and St Nicolas, the programme includes Sugar Feats, Chanukah and Divali.

Check out the special festival calendar.

In the Houses of Prayer tour, museum docents lead pupils through Amsterdam’s city centre to see all kinds of places of worship Inside the buildings and while we walk, we discuss the differences and the similarities between the various locations and the world’s religions. Living in the 17th century

In this tour, the museum docent leads pupils along narrow stairs, seventeenth-century rooms and centuries-old kitchens to the hidden church in the attic. On the way, we discuss what we see in the various rooms and spaces. What do we notice? What are the differences between life then and now? Are there similarities? And why was the church hidden? There’s lots to explore in this unique historical house!
