Mission and vision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As soon as you enter the hidden church – where Catholics came together – you literally experience what it means as a religious minority to have to hide your identity in the public space. The church prompts reflection on religious freedom, identity and (in)tolerance in society. Why were Catholics not allowed to express their faith in public? What did it do to them to be able to practise their religion only behind closed doors? How free are you if you cannot show your identity openly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These questions are still relevant today, especially in the culturally diverse and multi-religious society we live in. After all, what is freedom? How tolerant and tolerant are we really, towards ourselves and others? Where does the freedom of some end and the freedom of others begin? Increasingly, we face discrimination, polarisation and inequality of opportunity. The hardened debate creates prejudice and fear of the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History shows that issues of (in)tolerance, freedom of conscience, freedom of speech and religion are of all times. It is vital to continue protecting these freedoms. This is why the museum is committed to an open and democratic society in which everyone can, may and dares be themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The museum’s mission is to keep its unique historical heritage alive by actively managing the attic church and connecting its intangible value to current social themes such as religious freedom, identity and tolerance. We do this by positioning the museum as a welcoming place for interaction and sharing experiences. We facilitate dialogues on tolerance through programmes and activities. The emphasis is always on strengthening understanding and social cohesion in a culturally diverse society.

Executive director and board of trustees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our Lord in the Attic Museum is a foundation with an unremunerated board of trustees and an executive director. The foundation conducts its business in line with the Cultural Code of Governance. The annual financial report explains in more detail how the code is implemented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Director<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Birgit B\u00fcchner (b. 1962) is a graduate of the University of Nijmegen. Before she began her career at Our Lord in the Attic Museum in 2008, she worked in business and the film sector. In 2016, she worked as interim director at the Bible Museum and was appointed director of Our Lord in the Attic Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Birgit B\u00fcchner on Our Lord in the Attic Museum: \u201cThis is an enormously inspiring museum to work for. Together with our team, we focus both on the historical value of this remarkable Catholic heritage, and on the contemporary significance of the house and the collection. We develop education programmes about tolerance, and are continually trying to develop topical perspectives to encourage visitors to reflect. We pose ourselfs challenging questions, such as: What does tolerance mean in our day-to-day life? What does this place say about Amsterdam? I also think it\u2019s important to make every effort to promote cohesion in the city. Cooperation with social and cultural partners is an essential aspect. It gives our story, and the story of Amsterdam, greater depth and more importance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
